I'm so sorry for your loss, your Matthew is so sweet and precious, I wish he were here with you.

I hope you are able to fulfill your New Years Resolutions; I try to but usually end up failing by the end of the month. Getting rid of debt is a big one for me but I think it's going to take more than just a year to get rid of all of it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674808392725307381.post-53975376336534448832012-01-08T00:58:19.354-07:002012-01-08T00:58:19.354-07:00Hi Rebecca! It sounds like you guys have a good method for making your vehicles work for you for a long time. Jerry and I do not have car payments either. I probably like it that way more than he does since he drools over new trucks constantly. The problem pops up when our vehicles need maintenance. As we rack up the miles on our vehicles they seem to need fixed more often. And then we haven't been good savers so...robbing Peter to pay Paul antics ensue.

Over a hundred thousand?! Oh my. I know it gets spent in chunks, but still. You deserve to have very little debt after all that you have been through. I am really looking forward to the day when you get to say, "It was all worth it to get here."

I'm glad to hear the Dave Ramsey stuff is helpful to other people too. I am really enjoying it, actually.Reesehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15141795717597267116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674808392725307381.post-80777113340750598712012-01-07T23:44:38.219-07:002012-01-07T23:44:38.219-07:00It sounds like some of your issue was youth and in...It sounds like some of your issue was youth and inexperience with managing money, but it sounds like a lot of it also had to do with your grief after losing Matthew, so please don't beat yourself up over that.

I used to be in charge of our finances, and when I was, I watched everything I spent very carefully. We had literally no credit card debt, the one new car we bought (a Toyota Corolla) we paid off in 2 1/2 years, I drove it for 10 years, R has driven his current truck for 10 years, we bought both of our current vehicles used and paid cash for them, etc. But as all of our losses occurred and the grief built and built, I didn't have the mental or emotional capacity to do all the medical research, all the treatments, and all of the finances, so R took those over.

He's not as strict about "no debt" as I had been, so now we've got about $25k of credit card debt. This is on top of the $30k of debt we paid off when we refinanced a few years ago. And none of that was for frivolous stuff, either - considering we've spent more than $100k on all the infertility treatments and failed adoptions, it's actually kind of surprising we don't have more debt at this point.

So I totally get how you can find yourself in the situation you're in, even though you're a very responsible person. And facing that kind of mess is overwhelming.

But I hope the Dave Ramsey stuff helps you. There's a kit for Financial Peace University - we have a copy of it sitting in our bookcase from several years ago when we were in a Bible study, before infertility was a part of our lives. We need to revisit it, too, because at some point I'd like to get to the point where I could stay home or work part-time. Another couple who did the study with us really applied it and got themselves out of a lot of debt very quickly, so it can be done.Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09564075022074996137noreply@blogger.com
